Who said "football is a game of two halves?” Well never a truer statement could describe Tuesday night's Middlesex Cup game against Wembley.
From a management perspective, the hardest thing for us to judge is what mood the players are in prior the game, especially during the warm up, and to be honest the boys looked sharp, the energy levels were where I wanted them, but what disappointed us was within the first 10mins of the game, we looked the total opposite. Unfortunately too many players were allowing the game to go past them especially when we didn't have the ball.
The encouraging part of the first half Tuesday was even though going in at half time 0 - 3 down, we created a lot of chances, especially when Perry was bullying his way down the left wing and provided numerous opportunities which we just couldn't put away.
The second half was a joy to be a part of!! Everything we didn't do in the first we did in the second, we pressed all over the park, we didn't allow them time on the ball and we took our chances. The introduction of Ash Quashie and Callum gave us addition energy in midfield and a voice from Ash which has been missing for a while now, but they also gave Hicks (Skip) an additional lift and allowed him to get on the ball and press higher. We got Perry and Conor more on the ball and both of them attacked both fullbacks with pace and both got their rewards on the night with both getting a goal.
What impressed me the most was the attitude of the whole squad and those who weren't in the team on the night with just how much support they offered the team, especially Jako and Joe, even though there was obvious disappointment at being taken off at half time, they both showed a great deal of character and cheered the boys on to the end, credit to them both, where possibly others would have thrown their toys out!
As players I hope we've learnt a lot from Tuesday, I know as a management team we learnt a massive amount about the character of the team and found a new young gem in Callum.
Well done boys, come on you Spelly Arms!!
