It was another cold and windy Tuesday night in Sunbury. Tuesday’s game was in the Southern Combination Challenge Cup. It was a tough one for both teams considering the conditions and was a game of very few clear-cut chances.
First Half
The best chances came for Raynes Park in the opening 20 minuets when Spelthorne’s number 1, Jack Cannon, made two reaction saves with his feet against Raynes Park’s pacey number 10, Faiz Yuusuf. Just after that Spelthorne scored a goal! But it was offside…. Sam Rees put in a brilliant cross which was turned into the Raynes Park goal by their own number 10. Unfortunately, Rees was offside just before he fizzed the ball in, so the goal did not stand.
Another brilliant chance came from Spelthorne’s midfield maestro, Josh Nyero, as he headed over the bar a brilliant cross in from a corner kick. Seconds later Billy Frost was through on goal when the Raynes Park keeper got down well to his left to deny him. That was it for the first half apart from a free kick by Lewis Flatman which went straight into the keeper’s gloves.

Second Half
The Raynes Park keeper took a big knock during a scramble at the end of the first half, so he got replaced by the RPV manager, who was on the subs list.
The real threat for Spelthorne had come in the form of Sekani Mccalmon, he had the oppositions defence all over the place with his quick feet and outrageous skills. He was constantly getting fouled but the referee, Sam Ingrey, was having none of it.
Up the other end of the pitch, the first and only booking was made when Raynes Park’s Eoin Fraser, went down in the box but was booked for simulation.
There was no other action throughout the second half, and this therefore led to a penalty shoot-out.

Penalty Shootout
It was a shootout that Spelthorne will want to forget. We converted our first couple of penalties, but the third one was blazed over the bar. The resulting penalty from Raynes Park was also blazed over the bar so all things were level. That was until Spelthorne had their next penalty saved and the following Raynes Park penalty was scored, sending them through to the next round of the cup.
