Wood 2-3 Spelthorne Sports Sat 3rd October - League

Another result that underlines the openness of this league as Spelthorne, deservedly, claimed the points at Wibbandune.

Wood had Charlie Emery on the bench as he had declined a midweek move elsewhere but it was the visitors who flew out of the traps and they led in the 2nd minute when Luckins, in on the left, squared to Flatman who forced home from close range. Harding replied as his shot shaved the post while Young did well to tip a Flatman cross onto the bar and Flatman flashed a header wide from a corner kick and another corner saw Mbonkwi's header cleared off the line by Hughes. Spelly's pressure bore fruit again on 14 minutes when a cross from the right saw Wood's defence all at sea and Luckins knocked the ball home all too easily. There were penalty shouts when Ogunseye was caught by Roach before Gabaza, overlapping on the left, saw his goal ruled off for offside. Wood were back in it on 21 minutes in fortunate fashion when Ogunseye's wild shot was held up by Harding who fed Woodhouse to his right and he smashed the ball home past Buss. Goodman was booked for a foul on Hughes in front of the dugouts while a fierce cross from Moody just eluded Flatman as the game continued to ebb and flow on a superb playing surface.

HT 1-2 – A half of two halves so to speak!

Wood were looking for a quick levelling goal and Buss produced a fine save to deny Harding from 25 yards and Ogunseye hooked over the bar after good play from Woodhouse. A cute free kick put Embalo in on goal but he delayed his shot which, when it came, was lame.

Former Wood player, Sotoniwa, was having a good game at the back well supported by skipper Hicks and Snook took one for the team as Spelly countered. Buss was brave at the feet of Embalo and, while Wood were now the better side, the visitors always looked a threat on the break. Emery and beard replaced Mead and Woodhouse and Alexander replaced Goodman for Spelly. A superb passing move saw Ogunseye fire inches wide and Buss saved well from Beard but the feared breakaway goal came on 73 minutes as Wood stood off Luckins and he drove home a superb strike from 30 yards into the top right hand corner. Wood rallied and Harding chipped Embalo in and he easily made it 2-3 within a minute and Emery headed just wide as the noise level from one visiting supporter shot up! Vickery and Howe joined the fray for Spelly and Stevenson replaced Frodsham and Snook was booked for dissent as Spelthorne saw the game out and maintained their improved form. But for the opening 20 minutes, this was a close game, and very entertaining.
